Each TR-808 pattern has a 1st Part and 2nd Part that play sequentially to create 32-step phrases
The TR-808 stores patterns in pairs: every pattern slot has a 1st Part and a 2nd Part that loop in sequence (1st Part → 2nd Part → repeat). Each part can be programmed independently. By default the 1st Part has length 16 and the 2nd Part has length 0 (disabled). Setting the 2nd Part length to 16 effectively doubles the pattern to 32 steps, enabling a 2-bar phrase. Pattern length can also be set to any value up to 16, allowing odd-length grooves. An important asymmetry: changing the 1st Part length resets the 2nd Part length to 0, but changing the 2nd Part length never affects the 1st Part.
Examples
Set 1st Part to 16 steps with a standard house kick; set 2nd Part to 16 steps with a variation that drops the kick on beat 3. The machine plays both alternately for a 2-bar loop.
Assessment
Explain the behavioral difference between setting the 1st Part length vs the 2nd Part length. Why would a producer use a 12-step 1st Part followed by a 4-step 2nd Part?
