The TR-808 Accent track sequences volume increases across all voices simultaneously to add swing and feel
The Accent instrument is a special 16th-step sequence that does not trigger a drum sound but instead raises the overall output volume on whichever steps are active. The LEVEL knob for Accent sets the degree of loudness difference: inactive accent steps get progressively quieter as LEVEL increases, while the loudest (accented) steps remain constant. This effectively creates a groove-emphasis tool that works across all voices at once — accented steps feel louder and more present. The technique is how many classic 808 patterns get their propulsive, punchy swing without relying on velocity variations on individual notes.
Examples
Set Accent triggers on steps 3 and 7 with LEVEL at 70%. Steps 3 and 7 will be at full volume; all other steps will be noticeably quieter, creating a pushing offbeat emphasis.
Assessment
Explain how the Accent LEVEL knob changes the relationship between accented and non-accented steps. Compare the TR-808 Accent mechanism to velocity-per-note in a MIDI sequencer.
