The TR-808's Manual Play mode schedules pattern transitions and fill-ins to happen at phrase boundaries, not immediately

In MANUAL PLAY mode, the TR-808 does not switch patterns immediately when you press a button — it waits for the current pattern to finish playing and then switches at the top of the next cycle. This ensures beat-locked transitions. Basic Rhythm patterns loop until you select a different one; selecting a new Basic Rhythm schedules it to play next cycle. Fill-In patterns (the last 4 pattern slots) have special behavior: pressing TAP triggers the fill to play once after the current pattern, then the sequencer returns to the Basic Rhythm. This is how classic 808 DJs create song structure: long sections of looped rhythm interrupted by occasional fills at bar boundaries.

Examples

While pattern 1 is looping, click pattern 5 — the machine finishes pattern 1 then switches. Press TAP to trigger a fill; after the fill plays, pattern 5 resumes.

Assessment

In Manual Play mode, describe what happens when you (a) click a different Basic Rhythm pattern button, (b) press TAP. Explain why the TR-808 waits for the phrase boundary rather than switching immediately.

“To trigger an `INTRO/FILL IN` you need to press the `TAP` button which schedules the fill pattern to be played after the currently playing pattern has finished.”
