The 7 diatonic modes are rotations of the major scale, each with a unique interval structure and characteristic mood

The seven diatonic modes (Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian) are each generated by starting on a different degree of the major scale. Ionian = major scale (degree 1). Dorian = starts on degree 2 (minor with raised 6th). Phrygian = degree 3 (minor with flat 2nd — used in psy-trance, flamenco). Lydian = degree 4 (major with raised 4th — euphoric). Mixolydian = degree 5 (major with flat 7th — rock). Aeolian = degree 6 (natural minor). Locrian = degree 7 (diminished 5th with tonic — dark techno/DnB). Each can be transposed to any of 12 keys.

Examples

D Dorian: D E F G A B C D (minor-like with B natural). E Phrygian: E F G A B C D E (characteristic E-F half-step drop used in psy-trance).

Assessment

Identify the mode: a scale starting on G using all white keys. Identify the characteristic interval that distinguishes Lydian from Ionian.

“seven diatonic modal scales in all, and to obtain these, the position of the first degree of the scale (that is, the tonic) is changed”
