Rotating the tonic of the pentatonic scale produces 5 distinct modes, each with a different emotional character
The pentatonic scale asymmetric pattern (T, T, m3, T, m3) generates 5 distinct modes when the tonic is rotated to each of its 5 notes. The most commonly used: Mode 1 (major pentatonic, C D E G A), Mode 3 (minor pentatonic, A C D E G — used in blues improvisation), Mode 5 (B D E G A — sometimes called the Yo scale in Japanese music). With 12 possible keynotes, there are 60 pentatonic modes in total. Traditional Chinese music linked these 5 modes to the 5 Taoist elements.
Examples
C major pentatonic (mode 1): C D E G A. A minor pentatonic (mode 3): A C D E G. Amazing Grace uses the major pentatonic. Blues lead guitar/synth uses minor pentatonic.
Assessment
Starting from G, build all 5 pentatonic modes. Identify which mode is the minor pentatonic and explain its use in blues improvisation.
