Using more than 3 E1.31 universes in WLED degrades frame rate below 40fps
WLED’s general recommendation is to use no more than 3 universes (510 LEDs total) if smooth 40fps (25ms frame time) or better is required. Multiple E1.31 sources controlling a single WLED controller also harm performance. WiFi-related latency can cause visible stuttering; disabling WiFi sleep on ESP32 devices reduces ping and eliminates stuttering at the cost of higher power consumption. The WLED AP mode may also not work reliably for E1.31 — connecting WLED to an infrastructure WiFi network is recommended. These constraints directly affect the planning ceiling for audio-reactive LED installations where low latency is perceptually important.
Examples
A 510-LED audio-reactive strip driven by LedFx at 40fps: stays within 3-universe limit, runs smoothly. Scaling to 800 LEDs (5 universes): likely drops below 40fps on most consumer routers.
Assessment
Describe two configuration choices — one regarding universe count and one regarding WiFi settings — that will improve E1.31 frame rate performance in WLED.
