VCV Rack is a free, near-limitless software modular synthesizer that closely approximates hardware Eurorack for learning and planning

VCV Rack is an open-source, free-to-download virtual modular environment that emulates Eurorack modules in software. It is widely regarded as the closest experience to hardware modular without the cost of physical modules. It is used for: (1) learning patch concepts before committing to hardware; (2) prototyping systems to understand what modules you need; (3) making music without hardware. Third-party developers publish hundreds of VCV modules, including emulations of popular hardware modules. The barrier to entry is low — only a modern computer is needed.

Examples

Before buying a $250 Mutable Instruments Plaits, patch its VCV Rack equivalent (Free Sources) to understand wavetable and model-based synthesis. Try patching it with a sequencer and filter to understand how it fits in a voice.

Assessment

Name two legitimate use cases for VCV Rack beyond ‘free music making.’ Explain why VCV Rack is typically recommended before hardware modular.

“By far the closest experience to a real modular is VCV Rack, which is also free to download and use without restriction. VCV Rack is essentially an near limitless environment where you can build a modular system free from the costs of owning all the bits in real life.”
