A low-pass cutoff ramped upward over a phrase opens the groove without adding voices

The filter-open build is used when entering a build section where energy must climb without adding new voices. The cutoff of a low-pass filter on a harmonic voice is automated to ramp from a closed position (e.g. 400 Hz) to a bright open position (e.g. 6000 Hz) over N cycles. On the drop, the filter snaps back to a fixed open value — the sudden brightness is the perceived drop. This technique builds tension through spectral opening rather than density increase, preserving a different texture axis, and is commonly paired with a visual build move for coordinated AV energy.

Examples

Strudel: n(“0 3 5 7”).s(“sawtooth”).lpf(saw.range(400, 6000).slow(16)) ramps the cutoff over 16 cycles. On the drop, snap to a fixed .lpf(6000) — the instant brightness reads as arrival.

Assessment

Explain how building tension via a filter-open sweep differs from building it by adding a new voice. When is filter-open preferred, and what happens to the filter on the drop?

“**Trigger:** entering a `build` toward a `drop`; energy must climb over a phrase without adding voices. **Move:** ramp a low-pass cutoff up over N cycles so the groove "opens".”
