Thru playback continues past a triggered slice into the rest of the sample for natural breakbeats

Ableton Simpler’s Thru mode (also in Reason’s Mimic sampler) changes triggered-slice behaviour: instead of stopping at the end of the slice region, playback continues through the rest of the whole sample until the next pad is hit. Because a single trigger keeps the loop rolling, fewer pads must be played to achieve a continuous, flowing breakbeat, so less coordination is needed to avoid gaps. It is particularly effective for natural-sounding drum-and-bass performance because it leverages the groove already encoded in the recording rather than making the performer fill every gap.

Examples

In Push/Live set Simpler to Thru on a chopped break, trigger slice 1, and it plays on through slices 2-4 until you hit the next pad.

Assessment

Describe how Thru mode differs from default One Shot mode and why it eases breakbeat performance.
