setcpm() sets global tempo in cycles per minute; the default 30 cpm equals 2-second cycles
Strudel’s tempo is expressed in cycles per minute (cpm) rather than beats per minute (bpm). The default is 30 cpm, meaning one cycle = 2 seconds. setcpm(60) produces 1-second cycles. Because musical patterns are defined in terms of cycles, changing cpm uniformly scales all patterns proportionally. The relationship to bpm depends on how many beats a composer maps to one cycle; the workshop notes that 30 cpm = 120/4 — aligning with 120 bpm in 4/4 where one cycle is one bar.
Examples
setcpm(30) // default: 2-second cycles setcpm(90/4) // one bar of 4 beats at 90 bpm
Assessment
If setcpm(30) gives 2-second cycles, what cpm value gives 0.5-second cycles? How would you describe this relationship to a learner who knows bpm?
