Vary the type of energy (density, brightness, space) not only the loudness level
Two sections can share the same numeric energy level yet feel opposite because they use different dimensions of tension: a busy hi-hat pattern (high density) versus a wide filtered pad (high brightness/space) can both sit at energy 0.6 but create different moods. A set arc should vary which dimension carries the energy across sections — density, brightness, motion, space, and register — not only raise and lower a single loudness dial. This keeps a set from feeling monotonous even when its overall energy curve is well shaped.
Examples
Build A: increase density (more voices, faster subdivisions). Build B: open brightness (filter sweep, reverb bloom). A set using both is more varied than two identical density builds even when their energy curves have the same shape.
Assessment
List three dimensions of tension that can be varied independently of loudness. Describe a case where two sections at the same energy value feel contrasting because they use different dimensions.
