Tension is built by ramping one or two dimensions over a phrase then resolving on a boundary

Tension in a set is a ramp followed by a resolution: raise one or two dimensions of energy (density, brightness, motion, space, register) gradually over a phrase — the build — then resolve them on a section boundary — the drop or release. Ramping only one or two dimensions leaves the others as headroom for later; raising everything at once has nowhere left to climax, because a resolution reads as release only relative to a tension that was still incomplete. The structure is therefore deliberately partial on the way up so the boundary can deliver the payoff.

Examples

Over a build, ramp density and brightness while leaving space and register untouched; resolve on the boundary with a drop. Maxing density, brightness, motion, space, and register together in the build leaves no dimension free to make the boundary feel like an arrival.
