Sample locks switch which sample plays on a specific sequencer step
A sample lock is a parameter lock applied to the SAMP parameter on the SRC page, swapping which sample plays on that trig without changing any other settings (unlike a full preset lock). Any of the 1016 sample slots loaded to the project can be assigned to individual steps. This turns a single track into a sample playback sequence with a different sound each step — e.g., a series of different percussion hits, or a melodic phrase from distinct samples. The operation is the same as any other parameter lock: hold a trig in Grid Recording, turn the SAMP knob. Sample locks differ from preset locks (which replace the entire sound engine state) — sample locks only change the source audio while retaining pitch, filter, amp, and FX settings.
Examples
Track 1 has a snare preset. Hold step 1, lock SAMP to a kick sample. Hold step 5, lock SAMP to a hi-hat. Steps 9–16 stay as the snare. One track, four different instruments via sample locks.
Assessment
Distinguish a sample lock from a preset lock. If you lock SAMP on step 3 to a different drum hit, do the filter and envelope settings change?
