The rough mix is the version the artist has lived with during recording and production. It establishes the expected level relationships (vocal prominence, instrument character) and special effects the producer regards as essential. A professional mix engineer must reference the rough mix to verify that nothing critical has been omitted and to understand the intended aesthetic direction. Deviating significantly without agreement can result in the engineer’s excellent mix being rejected because it doesn’t match the client’s expectations. The safer approach is to treat the rough mix as a floor, not a ceiling—improve the sonics while preserving the overall direction.

Examples

Band rough mix has heavy plate reverb on vocals; mix engineer removes all reverb for a ‘dry’ modern sound. Client rejects the mix because the plate reverb was an intentional stylistic choice.
