The Akai MPC can mark slice points live while a sample is still recording
The MPC is unique in letting you chop a sample while it is being recorded: in Slice sampling mode, tapping the drum pads as you sample creates slice markers on the fly. After recording you are offered the choice to save the sample to the pool or immediately create a new program with the slices assigned across pads (which you can trim later). This ‘mark on the fly’ capture is not available on Maschine or Push, which require the sample to be fully recorded before you enter a separate chop mode. It suits performers who want to capture and immediately riff on a loop.
Examples
On an MPC: engage Slice Sampler, record from vinyl, tap pads at each drum hit, then after stop create a new Drum Program from the slices.
Assessment
Describe the MPC’s Slice sampling mode and how it differs from the Maschine/Push ‘record first, chop after’ approach.
