Frenchcore performance shifted from vinyl soundsystem DJing to commercial sets with added live instruments
Frenchcore’s performance format tracks its move from underground to mainstream. Initially it was performed by a DJ or a mobile sound system (a freetekno hallmark) playing vinyl records, heard at nightclubs and teknivals. Modern frenchcore performances take place at nightclubs, concert halls and music festivals, are much more commercial, and run on standard DJ equipment — and they sometimes add extra instruments to bring a live element to the show. This trajectory, from vinyl-and-soundsystem rave roots to polished festival sets with live musicians, is itself a lens on the genre’s mainstreaming.
Examples
Early: a rig on a mobile sound system at a teknival, DJ spinning vinyl. Now: a festival main-stage set on standard DJ gear, sometimes with live musicians (e.g. Dr. Peacock performing with live players).
Assessment
Contrast how frenchcore was originally performed with how modern frenchcore is performed, naming one performance context for each era.
