Electronic music is performed as a DJ set (mixing others' tracks) or a live PA (playing your own in real time)

Electronic dance music reaches audiences in two distinct performance modes. In a DJ set the performer selects and sequences pre-existing recordings, transitioning between tracks by matching their beat patterns for a seamless mix — the DJ is a selector/mixer. In a live PA (also loosely called a live DJ mix or live set) the producer performs their own music in real time in a concert or festival setting. The distinction matters because the tools, preparation, and skills differ: beatmatching and crate selection for the DJ; instrument/pattern triggering and arrangement for the live performer.
