Freesound attribution must name the sound, the author, the URL, and the license
When using a CC-BY or CC-BY-NC sound, the attribution must include: the sound’s name, the uploader’s username, the direct URL to the sound page, and the license name and version. The standard Freesound-endorsed format is a sentence or list of the form: ‘This [work] uses these sounds from freesound: “soundname” by username (http://freesound.org/s/ID/) licensed under CC BY-NC 4.0.’ When space is tight, a link to an external credits page is acceptable. The Freesound attribution list page (freesound.org/home/attribution/) tracks all sounds a logged-in user has ever downloaded, making it easy to compile credits retroactively. Incomplete attribution — omitting the URL or license version — is a common mistake that technically violates the license.
Examples
Correct: ‘Rainfall.wav by naturesounds (http://freesound.org/s/12345/) licensed under CC BY 4.0’. Insufficient: ‘Sound by naturesounds from Freesound’ (missing URL and license).
Assessment
Write a correct attribution string for a hypothetical Freesound sound, then identify two errors in a broken example attribution provided in the assessment.
