Generative composition means defining a rule-system and running it, not fixing every note

A long lineage — Leibniz, Bernoulli’s combinatorics, the Musikalisches Würfelspiel dice games attributed to Haydn and Mozart — treats composition as defining a rule-system that generates music, rather than authoring each note by hand. Leibniz claimed the algorithmic rules of composition can be specified so well that laypeople with no musical knowledge can follow them to compose. This ‘compose a system and run it’ stance is the historical root of generative art and of algorithmic live coding: the composer’s work moves up a level from the notes to the process that produces them, and a single system can yield an unbounded number of pieces. A tighter rule-set can also let a composer produce far more music than free note-by-note authoring.

Assessment

Contrast composing a piece with composing a system, and design a minimal rule-set (dice table or a few lines of pattern code) that generates more than one distinct musical outcome.
