Collaborative live coding platforms let multiple performers share a live code environment in real time

Several platforms allow multiple coders to write in the same shared buffer simultaneously, enabling ensemble live coding and collaborative performance. Estuary (estuary.mcmaster.ca) is a multilingual, zero-install platform that supports Hydra, MiniTidal, and other languages in isolated panes within one session. Flok (flok.cc) is a P2P collaborative editor for live coding music and graphics. Extramuros and EspGrid are earlier research-oriented systems. These platforms change the social dynamics of live coding from solo to ensemble, requiring performers to negotiate who edits what and when.

Examples

Estuary: open the URL, create or join a room, each performer codes in their own pane while output is mixed. Flok: connect two laptops to the same session URL, share TidalCycles or Hydra code.

Assessment

Name two collaborative live coding platforms and state one key difference between them. Explain what ‘multilingual’ means in the context of Estuary.
