Layering a sub-bass 'rumble' sample beneath each kick deepens techno low end without a separate bassline

A ‘techno rumble’ is a sub-bass sample — often made by heavily reverbing a kick or tom — that plays in unison with the kick drum. It fills the sub-bass frequencies below the kick’s body, adding a booming quality and frequency weight without a dedicated synth bassline. It is a common technique in modern techno. The rumble can be tuned to the track key or left free. When a bassline is later added, the rumble level can be reduced. Layering a rumble sub with a mid-tom produces a ‘percussive bass’ hit that is rhythmically interesting yet tonally full.

Examples

Stack a tr909 kick sample with a ‘low tom rumble’ sub sample on the same MIDI note so they trigger together, filling sub frequencies. In Pattern 3 of this guide the mid-tom and low-tom-rumble always hit simultaneously for a huge percussive bass.

Assessment

Layer a rumble sub under a kick pattern. Solo the rumble to hear its character alone and describe what frequencies it adds. Then detune it a semitone and describe the effect on the groove.

“There is a couple of 'techno rumble' sub bass samples in the kit, so I can add a sub bass in key with the kick easily. The rumble-subs are fairly common in techno and are useful to fill out the bottom end”
