Surge XT's Window oscillator multiplies a wavetable by a window waveform, creating formant-like timbres
The Window oscillator multiplies a source wavetable by one of 9 special window waveforms (Triangle, Cosine, Blend 1–3, Sawtooth, Sine, Square, Rectangle). The Formant parameter pitches the source wavetable independently from the window, so the window repeats at the played pitch while the wavetable content occupies a higher pitch — creating resonant formant effects similar to physical vocal tract resonances. Unlike the standard Wavetable oscillator, Window resamples smoothly without harmonic aliasing. The Morph parameter selects frames without interpolation (non-continuous by default). Changing the window waveform dramatically alters timbre character; Cosine produces a smooth rounded tone while Rectangle creates a harsher, buzzier result.
Examples
Set Formant to +12 semitones with a Cosine window for a warm, high-pitched buzzy timbre. Change window to Sawtooth for a brighter, more aggressive character.
Assessment
How does the Window oscillator differ from the Wavetable oscillator in how it handles aliasing? What does the Formant parameter do specifically to the wavetable content inside the window?
