Surge XT's mono play modes combine note priority, single-trigger legato, and fingered portamento independently
Surge XT offers four mono play modes combining two independent behaviors. Single Trigger (ST) mode does not retrigger envelopes when sliding between overlapping notes, producing a legato/slur effect. Fingered Portamento (FP) mode applies portamento only when notes overlap (classic keyboard portamento behavior), not on separated notes. Mono (ST+FP) combines both. Note priority in mono mode is set separately: Last (default), High, Low, or Legacy (last note, releases to highest). A separate option sets how envelopes behave at note onset: Reset To Zero vs. Continue From Current Level, the latter keeping the current amplitude as the attack starting point — important for smooth legato phrasing.
Examples
For a monophonic lead with smooth legato and automatic portamento when slurring: use Mono (ST+FP), Note Priority = Last, Continue From Current Level.
Assessment
What is the difference between plain Mono and Mono (ST) when playing two overlapping notes? Describe the patch settings that would produce portamento only when two notes overlap, but not on separated staccato notes.
