The scoop bass bin is a classic Jamaican sound-system low-bass cabinet, carried into DnB rigs
The scoop bass bin is a specific folded-horn low-frequency loudspeaker cabinet design associated with the Jamaican sound-system tradition (used by systems like Saxon and Coxsone). Its geometry is optimised to project deep bass efficiently and loudly. The Valve Sound System took this classic design as its bass foundation and ‘modernised’ it, then built the mid and top enclosures to fit around it — an explicit line of descent from reggae/dub sound-system engineering into UK DnB. This locates DnB’s low-end obsession within a longer sound-system genealogy rather than treating it as a new invention.
Examples
‘we use a classic base cabinet called a scoop base bin which is used by Saxon and Coxsone and all the Jamaican sound systems we basically modernized the classic bass bin.‘
Assessment
Identify the scoop bass bin, state which musical tradition it comes from, and say what part of the frequency range it handles.
