In a live set reverb is played as an expressive element for builds and breakdowns, not a static effect
Reverb in a live techno context is treated as another instrument to play rather than a fixed room simulation: it is a handy tool for adding space, creating builds and layers, and adding tension. Pushing a voice’s reverb up during a breakdown washes it out; increasing reverb time before a drop builds tension; feeding a signal into reverb with little or no dry signal synthesizes atmospheric texture. Dedicating substantial rack space to a high-quality, hands-on reverb is justified precisely because it becomes something to tweak throughout the set, i.e. a compositional and performance tool in the chain rather than cosmetic polish.
Examples
Send the kick or a synth into a big reverb during a breakdown for an atmospheric wash, then cut it sharply on the drop for impact.
Assessment
Explain how reverb is used as a live performance control versus a static mix effect, with an expressive technique for a build or breakdown.
