Return tracks and sends enable shared effects processing across multiple tracks simultaneously

In Ableton Live, return tracks are special tracks that receive signal from any other track via send knobs. This allows multiple source tracks to share one effects chain — the classic use case is a single reverb or delay return receiving contributions from drums, bass, and synths simultaneously. The send knob on each track controls how much of that track’s signal is routed to the return. Each return has a pre/post toggle: pre-fader sends are tapped before the track’s volume fader (allowing effects to run even when the track is muted or faded down); post-fader sends respect the fader level. This architecture is more CPU-efficient than inserting the same reverb as a separate device on every track, and produces a cohesive sound because all elements share the same reverb tail.

Examples

Create one Reverb on Return A. Set send amounts on kick (none), snare (medium), synth pad (high). All elements share the same reverb space but at different depths.

Assessment

Explain why a shared return reverb sounds more cohesive than separate reverbs on each track, and describe what pre-fader send does differently than post-fader.
