Footwork spread internationally by proxy: Rashad toured RP Boo's tracks abroad before RP Boo ever traveled
RP Boo held a 9-to-5 job and did not travel while DJ Rashad and DJ Spinn carried footwork worldwide. His strategy was to give Rashad exclusive tracks — such as ‘Area 72’ — and get reports back. ‘Area 72’ had its world premiere in London (via Rashad, with Tim & Barry) before it was ever played in the United States: the first calls RP Boo received about it came from Chicago DJs who had watched the London set on a live video stream. This proxy-touring model let the music build an international reputation without the originator’s physical presence, and it is what led Planet Mu to sign him and release Legacy, after which he began touring himself at 40.
Examples
‘Area 72’ premiered in London before any US play; Chicago DJs phoned RP Boo after seeing it streamed. Rashad’s touring built the demand that produced RP Boo’s Legacy album.
Assessment
Explain how the proxy-touring model built footwork’s international reputation without label promotion. What does ‘Area 72’ premiering abroad before home reveal about underground music circulation?
