Parallel expansion isolates transients or spill for controlled re-blending

An expander/gate used in parallel (processing a copy and blending it with the original) isolates part of a signal for independent level control without changing the original’s dynamics. Set high-threshold, fast attack/release to isolate just the transient blip at each hit and blend it in for extra definition, or gate a spill-laden copy and blend to dial spill in or out. A Range control (max gain reduction) achieves the blend when no wet/dry mix is provided.

Examples

Balancing a heavily-gated “snare-only” copy against the raw close-mic lets you set exactly how much hi-hat spill you keep, without altering the snare’s dynamic range.

Assessment

Explain how parallel expansion enhances transients or manages spill without changing overall dynamic range, versus serial gating.
