While the TR-808 dominated electro through analog synthesis, the Oberheim DMX used actual sampled drum sounds and had its own harder, sharper character. Herbie Hancock’s ‘Rockit’ (1983) used a DMX supplemented by a Synare (likely triggered by the DMX) rather than an 808. The DMX was ‘the other big hip-hop drum machine,’ favored by Run-D.M.C. and Davy DMX, and Hashim added one to his follow-up ‘We’re Rocking the Planet.’ The DMX and 808 represent two competing drum-machine designs: sample playback (DMX) vs. analog synthesis (808).
