Nu-disco emerged from UK labels Black Cock Records and Nuphonic in the 1990s as house that reintroduced live disco elements
The genre’s roots trace to Black Cock Records (active 1993-1998, founded by DJ Harvey and Gerry Rooney), which released non-official disco re-edits and inspired a generation of house producers to fold disco-sounding elements into their productions. Nuphonic Records (UK, mid-1990s) followed as the house label for Idjut Boys, Faze Action, Raj Gupta and Crispin J Glover — considered pioneers of nu-disco, with Dave Lee (Joey Negro) and Crazy P also cited. The Idjut Boys pioneered a ‘disco-dub’ style; Faze Action were among the first house units to make ‘all live’ productions drawing on disco methods.
Examples
Idjut Boys: ‘disco-dub,’ a house style influenced by freestyle and dub-inflected post-disco. Faze Action: ‘all live’ house productions insisting on disco methods. Both on Nuphonic.
