Modern New Beat (2010s) is more futuristic and cinematic than Old New Beat and directly precedes Midtempo Bass
The 2010s revival of New Beat, called Modern New Beat, is more futuristic, cinematic and cyberpunk in feel, using hypnotic futuristic basslines with vocal samples. It is the direct precursor of Midtempo Bass, which explains why the two are extremely close. They differ in that Midtempo Bass is slower (80–110 BPM), additionally draws on Electro House and Brostep, and features more robotic sound design and heavier bass manipulation. Distinguishing them means noticing tempo (Modern New Beat sits higher) and bass character (Midtempo Bass is more robotic, Brostep-influenced).
Examples
Max Brhon - Humanity and Facading - Walk Away are Modern New Beat examples; compare against Old New Beat (Confetti’s - The Sound Of C) to hear the shift toward cinematic, cyberpunk textures.
Assessment
Given a track, decide whether it is Modern New Beat or Midtempo Bass by citing tempo range and bass/sound-design character; justify with the two distinguishing cues.
