Early minimal techno was constructed around the Roland TR-808 or TR-909 drum machine, both still used today
In the early minimal techno scene, most tracks were built around either a Roland TR-808 or a Roland TR-909 drum machine, and both are still often used on minimal techno tracks today. These two machines supply the genre’s rhythmic core — the 808’s deeper, rounder voices and the 909’s sharper, more metallic hats and punchier kick — and their sequenced, quantized patterns suit the genre’s repetitive, stripped-down aesthetic.
Examples
Program a 128 BPM kick/hat pattern with TR-909 samples, then swap to TR-808 samples and compare the transient and tonal character of each machine’s kick and hats.
Assessment
Name the two drum machines that defined early minimal techno and describe how their rhythmic character suits the genre.
