A MIDI 2.0 device must implement MIDI-CI-with-discovery plus a feature, or UMP-with-discovery plus a feature
The specification defines exactly two paths to MIDI 2.0 compliance, and a device may take either or both. Path A: implement MIDI-CI to at least its minimum requirements including discovery, plus at least one of Profiles, Property Exchange, or Process Inquiry. Path B: implement the UMP Data Format to at least its minimum requirements including UMP Endpoint discovery, plus at least one of MIDI 2.0 Channel Voice Messages, Jitter Reduction Timestamps, System Exclusive 8, or Mixed Data Set. Discovery is mandatory on both paths: a device cannot claim MIDI 2.0 by implementing the data format or capability inquiry alone while skipping the relevant discovery mechanism.
Examples
A plugin implementing UMP plus MIDI 2.0 Channel Voice Messages qualifies via Path B. A hardware synth with MIDI-CI discovery plus Property Exchange qualifies via Path A.
Assessment
A device implements UMP but omits its endpoint discovery — can it claim MIDI 2.0? What about a device with MIDI-CI discovery but none of Profiles, Property Exchange, or Process Inquiry?
