A great monitor in a bad acoustic room cannot produce accurate mastering decisions
The acoustic environment of a mastering room is as critical as the quality of the monitors — the book states more time, attention, and expense go into the acoustic space than almost any other aspect. Even the best loudspeakers produce misleading frequency response in an untreated room, leading the engineer to over-use or mis-apply EQ to compensate. A bad room negates expensive monitors.
Examples
Bob Katz: a great monitor in a bad room does nothing for you; without a terrific room and a plan for how it integrates with the monitors, the speakers will still ‘suck.‘
Assessment
Why can a mastering engineer using expensive monitors in an untreated room still produce poor results?
