Clip envelopes automate parameters only within their clip while track automation applies across the full arrangement

Ableton Live has two automation layers. Track automation exists on the timeline: it applies to a track’s mixer and device parameters continuously throughout the arrangement. Clip envelopes are contained within individual clips and only take effect during that clip’s playback; they can automate audio properties (volume, pitch), mixer controls, or device parameters specifically for that clip instance. Clip envelopes can be unlinked from the clip’s length to run on an independent loop length, creating polyrhythmic automation patterns. This distinction matters in live performance: clip envelopes make certain parameter changes portable (they travel with the clip), while track automation stays fixed in the arrangement timeline.

Examples

A clip envelope on a synthesizer filter creates a sweeping effect that repeats every clip loop. Track automation of the same filter writes a one-time sweep that only happens at bar 32 in the arrangement.

Assessment

A producer wants a filter sweep to repeat every 2 bars inside a looping clip. Should they use a clip envelope or track automation? Explain why.

“The movement of a control across the song timeline or Session clip is called automation”
