Fabio coined liquid funk in 1999 via a Creative Source compilation
In 1999, London DJ Fabio alongside Sarah Sandy began championing a new form of drum and bass they called liquid funk, releasing a compilation of the same name on their Creative Source label. The style drew on ambient, funk, disco, house, and trance influences and featured widespread use of vocals. Although slow to catch on initially, it grew massively in popularity around 2003-2004 and by 2005 had become one of the biggest-selling DnB subgenres. Knowing the origin helps learners anchor liquid DnB in time and connect it to a specific scene-building move: a label release as genre declaration.
Examples
Fabio’s 1999 ‘Liquid Funk’ compilation on Creative Source is the genre’s founding document. By 2005 labels like Hospital Records, Liquid V, and Fokuz Recordings were carrying the style globally.
Assessment
Name the DJ who coined liquid funk, the year, and the label through which the term was launched. Explain why a compilation release can function as a genre-naming event.
