Jungle underwent multiple revivals showing that underground scenes can re-emerge decades after apparent commercial extinction

Jungle retreated to the underground by 1998 as drum and bass dominated. But it has experienced multiple waves of revival: the early 2000s drum-funk subgenre (Scientific Wax, Bassbin Records); Congo Natty’s continued releases culminating in ‘Jungle Revolution’ (2013); Chase & Status’s ‘RTRN II JUNGLE’ (2018); and ongoing 2020s activity from labels like Future Retro London and 3AM Eternal. The pattern demonstrates that when a scene is driven underground by commercial/racial exclusion rather than exhaustion of creative potential, committed original participants and new producers can maintain and reignite it.

Examples

Congo Natty, Shy FX’s Digital Soundboy label (2005), Corsica Studios nights, Forest Drive West, Tim Reaper as contemporary producers.
