Juke is a faster (150–165 BPM) ghetto-house variant with rapid, syncopated kicks matched to footwork dance

Juke (also juke house or Chicago juke) arose in the late 1990s as a faster variant of ghetto house. Two co-determined traits define it: a tempo of roughly 150–165 BPM, and kick drums that pound rapidly — and at times very sparsely — in syncopation with crackling snares, claps, hi-hats and very short sample increments, all markedly lo-fi. These traits are not arbitrary: juke evolved to match the energy of footwork, a competitive dance born in Chicago’s ghettos, house parties and underground competitions, so the frantic-but-gappy kick and the high tempo are driven by the dance’s demands. RP Boo, a former footwork dancer, is credited with the first canonical juke tracks.

Examples

A juke track near 160 BPM has rapid kick clusters and deliberate sparse gaps — the opposite of steady four-to-the-floor house — leaving space for the dancer’s feet.
