'Industrial dance' is a North American umbrella term covering both EBM and electro-industrial, not a synonym for EBM

‘Industrial dance’ is a North American umbrella term for electronic body music AND electro-industrial music — a common misconception treats it as a mere synonym for EBM, but it is broader, covering both the minimal EBM branch and the more layered electro-industrial branch. Fans of these genres call themselves ‘rivetheads’. The term has been applied since the mid-1980s to acts ranging from Cabaret Voltaire and early Die Krupps through Nitzer Ebb, KMFDM, Skinny Puppy, Ministry and Nine Inch Nails; Spin magazine ran a report on the industrial dance movement in Canada and the US in March 1989.

Examples

EBM under the umbrella: Front 242, Nitzer Ebb. Electro-industrial under the umbrella: Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly. ‘Rivethead’ = the self-identifying fan subculture. Spin, March 1989: two-page report on North American industrial dance.

Assessment

Someone claims ‘industrial dance’ and ‘EBM’ are the same thing. Explain why this is imprecise, naming the two subgenres the umbrella term actually covers.
