UK illegal raves in 1988-89 used phone-chain systems to direct attendees to locations announced only on the day

As illegal acid house parties moved outside London to fields around the M25, organizers developed a location-reveal system: flyers gave a phone number to call on the day, which directed callers to the next number or landmark, building a chain that ended at the actual party. ‘Right right you’ve made it to the pub now get yourselves over to this certain like next village.’ This created a scarcity and adventure dynamic — ‘looking for the party was probably the best bet.’ The system also provided legal cover since no address was advertised in advance. It was disrupted by police following organizers and arresting sound crews, and eventually by the 1994 Criminal Justice Act which targeted ‘repetitive beats’ events of 100+ people.

Examples

‘You’d get a number and then you’d phone and they’d tell you where it was happening’ — the chain ended at a pub or landmark, then redirected to the actual field.

Assessment

Describe how UK illegal rave organizers used phone chains to reveal party locations and explain why this system emerged as a response to police pressure.

“so they said right I can't tell you exactly where it's going to be but take this mobile phone number get ready bring your driver bring your people with you”
