Illbient is a dub-based trip-hop offshoot that fuses ambient with industrial hip-hop

Illbient is one of the subgenres trip-hop spawned. Wikipedia defines it as dub-based trip-hop that combines ambient music with industrial hip-hop, giving it a darker, more textural and atmospheric character than mainstream trip-hop. As a New York-associated derivative, illbient shows how the trip-hop template (slowed breakbeats, heavy dub bass, dense sampling) branched into more experimental, ambient-leaning territory. Knowing the trip-hop → illbient lineage helps place the atmospheric/dub wing of downtempo within a genre family tree.

Examples

Illbient is listed alongside IDM as a derivative form of trip-hop in the genre’s lineage. It leans toward ambient and industrial-hip-hop textures over song-form vocals.
