Sidechaining the reverb send to the lead ducks the reverb during melody notes, keeping clarity while preserving space in pauses

When processing a supersaw lead, reverb is applied via a send bus (set to 100% wet). To prevent the reverb from muddying the lead during the melody’s dense moments, sidechain compression is applied to the reverb send bus, triggered by the lead channel. When the lead sounds, the compressor ducks the reverb; when the lead is silent, the reverb blooms in the gaps. The same approach is applied to the delay send. This technique preserves the clarity and attack of the lead while still providing a sense of space and atmosphere between notes.

Examples

FL Studio: Fruity Limiter on reverb bus in compressor mode, sidechain input = Leads channel. Ableton: stock Compressor on reverb bus with ‘Audio From’ set to Leads, Sidechain enabled.

Assessment

Why would a producer sidechain the reverb send from a lead rather than simply using less reverb? What specific problem does sidechain ducking solve that turning down the reverb wet level doesn’t?

“so that the reverb ducks when the melody is playing.”
