UK hard house began as a gay-club-scene sound before broadening into the mainstream dance scene
UK hard house developed in the mid-1990s, initially exclusive to the UK gay club scene, where it was known as ‘Hand Bag House’ or ‘Hard Bag’. The club night Trade, with Tony De Vit as its resident DJ (the ‘godfather of UK hard house’), is widely regarded as its home and birthplace. Early producers such as The Tidy Boys, Pete Wardman and Captain Tinrib defined the sound there. This origin in gay nightlife is historically significant: it illustrates how dance-music subcultures frequently develop in queer spaces before crossing into the mainstream.
