Grid, Live, and Step recording modes each offer a distinct trig-entry workflow
The Digitakt II offers three sequencer recording modes. Grid Recording ([RECORD]): step-entry with the trig keys while the pattern plays or is stopped; deterministic and surgical. Live Recording ([RECORD]+[PLAY]): real-time input while the pattern runs; records note trigs, parameter locks, velocity, and keyboard-mode pitches; supports optional auto-quantize (toggle with double [PLAY] while holding [RECORD]). Step Recording ([RECORD]+[STOP]): inserts trigs step-by-step at a chosen step; pressing a key inserts a note and automatically advances to the next step — fast for entering melodies note by note. Step Recording JUMP mode links step advancement to the LEN parameter, allowing direct entry of notes with varying durations. Each mode suits a different creative workflow: Grid for editing, Live for performing, Step for note-entry.
Examples
Compose the drum framework in Grid Recording. Switch to Live Recording and play a melody on the keyboard in real time. Fix timing issues in Grid Recording, then refine the melody with Step Recording JUMP mode for the correct note lengths.
Assessment
You want to record a syncopated melody in real time and then quantize it after. Which recording mode and what settings do you use?
