Goa trance began as DJs remixing Western electronic tracks into dancefloor mixes in 1980s Goa

Goa trance grew out of the hippie DJ scene in Goa, India. From 1983 DJs (Laurent, Fred Disko, then Goa Gil) switched from psychedelic rock to the electro-industrial/EBM flooding out of Europe. Crucially, they did not just play these tracks — they remixed them, removing the lyrics, looping the melodies and beats, and generally manipulating the sounds before presenting them to dancers as custom Goa-style mixes. This DJ-as-remixer practice, tied to the outdoor rave setting, shaped the drone-heavy, hypnotic character of the music. Goa-style parties spread globally from 1993, the genre crystallized under the name ‘Goa trance’ around 1994, and it peaked commercially in 1996–97 before fading from the mainstream.

Examples

First Goa trance album: Project II Trance (1993). Golden age: 1994–1997. First festivals: Gaia Festival (France) and the still-running VooV Festival (Germany).
