Ghetto house is the Chicago root that spawned ghettotech, juke and footwork

Ghetto house, recognised from around 1992 out of Chicago house, is the parent of a family of derivative forms: ghettotech, juke/Chicago juke, footwork, and Baltimore club. Dance Mania was the primary label carrying the original sound. The lineage is a documented case of music co-evolving with dance — juke and footwork split off specifically to serve the footwork dance battles of Chicago — which is why the descendants get faster and more syncopated as they move away from the four-to-the-floor house root. Knowing the lineage lets a listener place a track in the Chicago booty-bass continuum by its tempo and rhythmic texture.

Examples

Dance Mania (label) → ghetto house → juke → footwork; plus ghettotech and Baltimore club as sibling derivatives. RP Boo bridges juke and footwork as a former footwork dancer turned producer.

Assessment

Order ghetto house, juke and footwork by era and tempo, name their shared Chicago root and Dance Mania’s role, and state what drives the increase in tempo/syncopation down the line.
