Frankfurt's early 1980s electronic scene coined the word 'techno' before Berlin's scene existed
Before Berlin became synonymous with techno, a small scene in Frankfurt in the early 1980s already called its music ‘techno.’ Record salesman Taller (also known as Taller II XLC) is credited with first using the term and later played a central role as organiser, DJ, and producer. From 1984 Taller ran the Techno Club on Sunday afternoons at the Disco No-Name, evolving by 1987 into a leading EBM and electronic music venue at the Dorian Gray airport club. The in-house fanzine Front Page, launched in 1989, became the leading voice of the techno-house movement. This Frankfurt origin story is frequently overshadowed in popular accounts that focus on Berlin.
Examples
The Dorian Gray club (Frankfurt Airport) hosted the Techno Club from the mid-1980s. DJ Sven Väth’s Omen Club in Frankfurt became a global pilgrimage site in the early 1990s.
