Footwork's founding canon was made by RP Boo, DJ Rashad, and DJ Clent, who formed the Beatdown House crew in 1998
The footwork sound is generally credited to a small group of Chicago producers: RP Boo (a former footwork dancer credited with the first canonical songs), DJ Rashad, and DJ Clent. In 1998 DJ Clent formed a production crew — DJ Spinn, DJ Rashad, RP Boo, DJ C-Bit, Majik Myke and others — called ‘Beatdown House,’ out of which footwork originated. Other early proponents included DJ Diamond, DJ Roc, and DJ Nate. Knowing the originating crew matters for tracing the genre’s genealogy and for distinguishing footwork’s inventors from the adjacent ‘juke’ lineage associated with DJ Gant-Man and M Puncho, from whom the Beatdown House producers consciously tried to distance themselves.
Examples
DJ Rashad’s 1998 track ‘Child Abuse’ (with DJ Thadz) and DJ Clent’s 1996 ‘Hail Mary’ (with DJ Slugo) and 1998 ‘3rd Wurle’ are cited among the sound’s foundational productions.
Assessment
Name the three producers most associated with founding footwork and the 1998 crew they formed. Distinguish this lineage from the ‘juke’ lineage of Gant-Man and M Puncho.
