DJ Fulltono of Osaka pioneered Japanese footwork from 2008, persisting past crowds who found the tempo too fast
DJ Fulltono from Osaka is credited as Japan’s first notable footwork pioneer, bringing the genre into his mixes around 2008 — two years before Planet Mu’s Bangs and Works compilations. Initial Japanese crowds found the tempo ‘too fast’ compared with the prevailing house/techno (120–130 BPM) and drum’n’bass (170–175 BPM), but built tolerance over time. Fulltono founded the Booty Tune label in 2008, initially for his own tracks and later a home for other domestic juke artists, and was also a key figure in Japan’s ghettotech scene. By around 2018 Japanese footwork was regarded as one of the country’s most vibrant EDM scenes.
Examples
