The DX7 pitch EG applies to all operators simultaneously and cannot be isolated per operator
The DX7 has a single pitch envelope generator that governs the overall pitch of the entire voice. It affects all operators — both carriers and modulators — simultaneously and uniformly. There is no way to route the pitch EG to only some operators, nor to have two different pitch envelopes in one voice. This is an architectural constraint: pitch bends induced by the pitch EG change both the carrier frequency and the modulator frequency by the same amount. The level parameter ‘50’ represents normal pitch; values above raise pitch, values below lower it. This global nature limits pitch EG to overall pitch swoops (synth bass falls, sci-fi effects) rather than independent operator detuning.
Examples
Setting Pitch EG to sweep from very high to 50 creates a downward pitch swoop on every note, usable for sci-fi laser sounds or synth-bass portamento effects.
Assessment
Explain why the DX7’s pitch EG cannot create a sound where one operator’s pitch sweeps while another stays fixed, and state what parameter value represents unaltered pitch on the pitch EG.
